This instruction book is intense. You need to have an understanding of music theory before you pick this book up or be willing to learn some as you work through this. He immediately goes into modes with no explanation of mode theory. With that said, it will make you think and begin to explore the fingerboard like you never have. If you want to challenge your current level of playing and creativity, get this book. It will stay in my library with just a couple of other books and will be used the rest of my guitar playing days. I have chucked many a guitar course book so hopefully that will tell you something.

After playing guitar for over forty years, I recently decided that I needed to go back and relearn everything right from scratch. Sure I could play some nice licks and tunes but I knew that my ability to improvise was severely limited by my spotty understanding of how the guitar works. It wasn't due to a lack of information, of course I knew that the fifth fret of the E string was the same note as the open A string etc, but somehow it wasn't gelling in my mind. At least not in a form I could use.Goodrick's approach of learning the guitar by working horizontally (i.e. up and down) one string at a time, and sticking to one key until the intervals are perfectly instinctual was exactly what I needed. My other hobby is reading about how the brain works, especially how it learns and creates, and this approach seems to fit with what I understand about cognitive science. The traditional vertical approach is popular because it gets you playing chords and songs quickly but it doesn't allow the brain to develop a solid map of the instrument. In other words, you might be fine if you stick to set of chords and fingerings that you've learned by rote, but you won't be in a position to really fly.

I'm sure I will benefit from this book (eventually). After all it's Mick Goodrick, right?However, I wish Mick had included a better and more detailed of his theory. No doubt he's excited about it, but it seems like maybe it was rushed to press without the needed explanations.No offense to Mick.

Reading the Kindle sample and table of contents, I thought it would help me with mastery of the instrument. But once I got past the "unitar" exercises, it turned out to be a textbook for modal improvisation. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it wasn't the boost I need right now. As have pointed out, this is not even for intermediates.

Goodrick's book is as informative as it is entertaining, an atypical method book. He does a wonderful job of describing the feel and techniques used in improvisation, and he does this with sincerity - no patronizing or controlling. The outlines of 1-2 string improvisation really are the key to truly integrating scales fluency and fretboard knowledge The section on tempi changed the way I approach music. This is a great book and I highly recommend it to guitarists who wish to understand music and the guitar better.

Maybe the best book on the subjet. Very deep... but demands lots of thinking and self examination. This is not a licks book or a learn play guitar in a few weeks. Amazing!

Mick Goodrick is likely crazy, not locked away crazy or dangerous crazy, but crazy nevertheless. You may have a hard time following his almost stream of consciousness writing style, however, his way of looking at the guitar is a dramatic departure from the norm. You may never even attempt any of the exercises in this book, however I think any serious guitarist will get something out of this book. This is one of those books you will come back to over time and emerge with some useful nugget of guitar wisdom. A word of caution, if you are expecting a lesson book holds your hand and guides you through chords, scales, etc, you are going to be disappointed. This book really is more of a way of thinking about the guitar.
