This is a biography of Lucullus, the half-forgotten Roman general and right-hand man to Sulla, who fought victoriously against both Mithridate VI and Tigrane, his son-in-law and King of Armenia. At the outset, I must admit that I was a bit disappointed because this book does not compare very well with the more scholarly one written on the same topic by Arthur Keaveney and first published in 1992. While the author does claim that his book focuses more on the military than that of his predecessor, I was left rather unconvinced after finishing it.The topic of Lucullus is an interesting one. He was a largely successful general, an excellent strategist and tactician, and he managed to defeat both of his adversaries against the odds, but failed in concluding the wars by capturing or killing either of them. He was also Sulla’s political heir, after having been his right-hand man but, here again, his record is somewhat mixed. His troops rebelled against him and he was side-lined and replaced in his command by Pompey who essentially finished what he had started and took most of the credit for it although Lucullus had done most of the job.The key thread of this book could have been to explain why Sulla, Marius or Pompey were remembered as successful whereas Lucullus, although not defeated in the field, does not share the same reputation and fame. The author provides many elements of explanations and hints at others, especially when stating that, perhaps more than Sulla, it is Lucullus that deserves to be seen as “the Last Republican†(the title of Arthur Keaveney’s biography on Sulla). However, he does not explicitly stress Lucullus’ relative character weaknesses when compared to his rivals other than suggesting that he was not a man of his times. In a nutshell, it seems that Lucullus was perhaps too much of what we would call “a gentlemanâ€, meaning that he was not – or unable to be - as ruthless, vindictive, self-centred and unscrupulous as his successful contemporaries (such as Pompey) could be. He was also intensely loyal, including to Sulla, and perhaps even at his own expense and at a time where Roman politics were increasingly driven by self-interest only.As an aristocrat, and perhaps a relatively shy person, he also seems to have lacked the “common touch†with his soldiers and been unable to plead with them, and playact with a bit of drama when necessary to keep them from mutinying and/or to extract from them further efforts. Another character trait was his philhellenism and his love of arts and knowledge which, by making him reluctant to let his troops sack enemy cities, tended to make unpopular and resented since they felt deprived of loot that they believed they deserved. While Lucullus does come across in this book and his Keaveney’s as a somewhat sympathetic character, he does seem to have been somewhat “too nice†and perhaps too righteous and too principled for his own good. It seems to be because of this that he is not ranked among the “top Roman generals†of the end of the Republic. Somehow, his lack of recognition and relative failure were the price he had to pay for not being as ruthless and unscrupulous as the others. Just about four stars.
